#15 - What type of drills and exercises can I do to engage my non-bowling arm?

QUESTION FROM AKASH

What type of drills and exercises can I do to engage my non-bowling arm?

ANSWER

Great question Akash.

Engaging the non-bowling arm is all about feel. You just need to make a conscious effort of ‘holding’ onto that arm as long as possible and really pulling it down hard. I’ve seen coaches use several methods:

1. Hold a ball in your non-bowling arm and do static/walkthrough bowling drills – the weight of the ball in your non-bowling arm acts as a counterweight to help you pull it down hard.

2. Another method is to hold a resistance band with your non-bowling arm whilst a coach or friend stands in front of you with the other end of the band. Do some drills and pull against the resistance band.

The idea of drills is to help your mind and body understand the feeling and mechanics of a movement. You need to do them enough times for muscle memory to start kicking in!

I hope that helps.

All the best.
