#8 - What is ‘timing’ in bowling and what are good checkpoints to know if you’re having timing issues or not?

QUESTION FROM ARMAAN

What is ‘timing’ in bowling and what are good check points to know if you’re having timing issues or not?

ANSWER

Hey Armaan,

Think of a batsman trying to force a shot versus a batsman who times the ball sweetly. Fast bowling is very much similar. It’s all about timing and getting the body to click at the point of release. Just like batting, it’s not something you can force, but it is something that you can feel.

In terms of checkpoints to know if you’re having timing issues. Ian Pont describes it perfectly; if you’re bowling too full, chances are that you’re releasing the ball too soon. If you’re bowling too short, chances are that you’re releasing the ball too late.

Mastering your action is about repetition. There is no shortcut. The more you bowl, the better your understanding will be and when you start to have control over the timing of your action, you'll be able to hit your targets consistently.

All the best!
