QUESTION FROM KUNAL
What exercises should we avoid in the gym as a fast bowler?
This is a really good question. We’re always asked which exercises to do but no one has asked which exercises to avoid.
It’s a tough question to answer. You need a strong overall body. But there is a difference between a strong body and a big body. Growing up, I was always told not to build your wings which is basically your lats. I'm sure you've heard that saying before as well. My response to that has always been that there is a difference between strong lats and big lats.
As fast bowlers, we’re looking for strength, not size. We spoke to Cricket Australia and Brett Lee’s coach, Jock Campbell about this and he summed it up perfectly, for ever kilo of muscle we put on, we increase the amount of force that goes through our limbs – so it’s a fine art in knowing when to put muscle on. Please look out for that podcast with Jock to hear more about this – it’s out in a few months I believe.
But to give you a reasonable answer, I would say that you should look to increase strength but don’t pack on size as that isn’t what you’re looking for.
I hope that helps.
All the best.
