Brett Lee used to run in fast but I’ve seen bowlers run in slow and still bowl around 140kph. Can that increase chances of injury?
This is a great question. Run-ups are unique to everyone.
Some bowlers need to run in fast to create enough momentum and energy in the crease whereas some bowlers rely more on power and upper body velocity. It just comes down to specificity and what each bowler is comfortable with.
Regarding injury, it’s a tough call.
Brett Lee used to charge in and he’s had numerous ankle injuries – could that be caused by the excessive amount of tension and force he created in the crease with his lower half?
Shaun Tait used to stroll in and he’s had upper body injuries – could that be caused by the ‘lack of’ energy he had in the crease therefore relying on excessive upper body force?
It’s a catch 22 situation. To bowl fast, you’re going to put your body through a lot of tension and doing it day in day out will cause injury – it’s part of the game. As athletes, the best you can do is ensure your body is fit, strong and fuelled correctly to limit the chances of injury but I believe there’s a slim chance in bullet-proofing yourself completely.
When we spoke to Zak Chappell, a fast bowler from Leicestershire who’s bowling around 145kph, he said that when he approached the crease slowly, he had to produce a lot more force with his upper body but when he approached the crease faster – he was generating the same amount of pace with less tension on his body. So it’s very unique.
